Definition

Piemonte or Piedmont, Italy

Piedmont (or Piemonte as it is known in Italy) is in the northwestern corner of Italy and produces Piemonte wine such as Barolo and Barbaresco which are made from Nebbiolo grapes. These wines are from the town of Alba.

Other grapes in the area are Barbera, Dolcetto, Grignolino, Brachetto, and Freisa. More than half of the 170,000 acres ov vineyards are identified as DOC.

The vineyards around Asti produce the famous Moscato d'Asti and sparkling Asti made from the Moscato grape.

You can also find Brachetto vineyards within the provinces of Asti and Alessandria between the rivers Bormida and Belbo, and the province of Cuneo. In Canelli the grape is known as Borgogna. The most notable wine here is the red Brachetto d'Acqui Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) which is made in both still and spumante (fully sparkling) versions.
